Position description
The Specialist Series position will assist in the operation of the Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) Facility at the UC Irvine Materials Research Institute (IMRI). IMRI has a large and growing user community of over 550 academic and industry users, with advanced materials characterization instruments that include state-of-the-art TEMs and scanning TEMs (STEMs), scanning electron microscopes (SEMs), focused ion beam (FIB) systems, a Kratos AXIS Supra surface science instrument and many material property measurement instruments (for details see http://www.imri.uci.edu/). The TEM Facility currently houses five S/TEMs, including a Nion UltraSTEM 200 HERMES, JEOL JEM-ARM300CF “Grand ARM” S/TEM, JEM-2800 S/TEM, JEM-2100F CryoTEM, and Thermo Scientific Glacios CryoTEM, plus a dualbeam FIB (Tescan GAIA-3 XMH FIB-SEM), a full sample preparation lab, and a wide variety of TEM holders and cameras.
The successful applicant must be a S/TEM expert with at least five years of in-depth, hands-on experience with S/TEM imaging, data analysis, sample preparation, and maintenance of S/TEM instrumentation. The applicant must have mastery of modern S/TEM instrumentation and methods, data collection, analysis, and interpretation. The applicant must be able to work both independently and collaboratively in teams. Candidates with experience operating user facilities and expertise with advanced S/TEM techniques such as TEM and STEM imaging, electron energy-loss spectroscopy, X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy using spherical aberration-corrected S/TEMs and advanced TEM specimen preparation techniques are of particular interest. Experience with Nanomegas PED, in-situ TEM, 4D STEM and S/TEM maintenance is a plus. Duties include: operate, maintain, and improve the S/TEMs; train, supervise, and work directly with users to carry out S/TEM work in research and service; prepare TEM samples using traditional techniques and dual-beam systems; work with other IMRI staff to identify and improve accessories and additional equipment in the TEM facility.
The Irvine Materials Research Institute (IMRI) is an interdisciplinary special research program for materials research established under the Office of Research at the University of California, Irvine (UCI).
